Leonard Cohen // "We don’t want to live a frivolous life, we don’t want to live a superficial life. We want to be serious with each other, with our friends, with our work. That doesn’t necessarily mean gloomy or grim, but seriousness...is something that we are deeply hungry for, to take ourselves seriously and to be able to enjoy the nourishment of seriousness, that gravity, that weight."

Vincent Van Gogh // "Many people seem to think it foolish...to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, "What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now." Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope."

Louis CK (photo of Lyndon Johnson) // "For me, the most important thing a president needs is empathy. It's the number one thing. You have to be upset if somebody gets hurt. You have to worry about other people. You have to have a gut feeling of like, 'Oh fuck, what would happen to these people if I do this.' Like Lyndon Johnson, as fucked up as he was, there's this picture you can find of him listening to...a tape describing what it's like to be a soldier on the front line of Vietnam and he's sobbing because he's the president and he's putting kids on the front line and it's shattering him that he's causing that kind of pain for his own people. That's what a president has to have...I don't feel that Trump has it. I think he knows how to sound, he knows how to connect to people. That's different. He knows how to read somebody's pulse and manipulate... When he does a rally, he talks about how he beat the guys and what losers the other guys are, for the whole time. He doesn't say, this is what we need to accomplish, this is what matters, this is what's happening to you people and it's not right. He talks about 'they're being unfair to me, this is all rigged...' With war and stuff, you have to make yourself sick to your stomach to send somebody to battle. You have to feel that way and I don't think that he has that."
